Revieuwed by Rik Rösken Diving accidents is something that can always occur. An investigation can often yield how a accident did occur and what roles where playing in it. While in Europe investigations are mostly concerned with the educational part, their american counterparts are often more concerned with insurance and lawsuit cases. Steven M. Barsky and Tom Neuman wrote this book for the latter kind of investigators, and depicts a intresting revieuw of how diving accidents could be researched in a structurised way. Although it is taken for granted that the investigator is a experienced diver, the writers did take in account that not every diver is toroughly familiar with both recreational as commercial diving. It would be however unfair to give the impression that the book is a oversight of equipment and possible failure points. The book goes much further and assist the investigator in how to speak with involved people and to deal with forms that he or she could come across. It also deals in how to prepare a incident rapport and testimony in court. Each chapter is accompanied with a case history which gives the feel and the right to call it a true textbook on the subject. While breath-hold diving is not a general subject in the book, a individual intrested in researching breath-hold diving incidents would still be able to use the guidelines for a incident research in this field. In either way this book is an asset for those who are intrested in dive accident investigation. Investigating Recreational and Commercial Diving Accidents by Steven M. Barsky and Tom Neuman, M.D., FACP, FACPM, published in 2003 by Hammerhead Press. ISBN 0-9674305-3-4 Look also at: http://www.hammerheadpress.com
