Manual of Freediving;Underwater on a single breath

Revieuwed by Rik Rösken

The manual of freediving, written by Umberto Pelizzari and Stefano Tovaglieri is the long awaited diving manual which could make the Italian dominated Apnea Academy a more global active certification agency. The manual, published by the same publisher that also brought us also Homo Delphinius and The Ten Kings of the Sea, presents itself as the first entirely illustrated and complete guide to freediving.

With over 360 pages and over a 100 illustrations, it does come close to that claim. The book does deal with a widely variety of topics ranging from the medical side of breath-hold diving to a example of a training program, including diving technique. Also subjects as how to deal with currents and emergencies are included and practical excercises in the swimmingpool.

With all the positive notes over the book, it is still possible to establish some critical points. It seems to be obvious that the ammount of information eventually overwhelmed the writers, who didn't include a index, and didn't use standard methods to compile the information into a easy to use teaching tool. Mistakes are also made on the medical part of the book. The proposed training methods are without the needed information for periodisation, although the book does refer to that method. Further topics as decompression sickness, lung bleeding and buccoal pumping are not explained. Topics who have been discussed in Dagmar Andres-Brummer's Apnoetauchen.

Overall, the book is quite inspiring for the sportsmen trainer and instructor. For those multilangual divers who are searching for a more general approach, it is however the german book that stays on top of my list.
