Umberto Pelizzari

L'homme poisson

(2003) Lake Competitions

By Rik Rösken

The French documentary about Umberto is recorded between 1995 and 1996 where he set a new world record on 105 meters Variable Weight and No Limits (131 Meter). But we will see much more then only the records.

We see the attempts from the technical diver's point of view and are surprised by the amount of logistics that goes with these attempts, which is quite different compared what we see normally. There is a decompression chamber, a diving bell and divers on compressed air and mixed gas as tri-mix

Besides the records, we also see much about training. With Oceanmen, Umberto seemed to earn his records almost effortless; however the opposite is proofed on this tape. It gives some insight in the hard work that precedes these records.

Also time is spend on what Umberto inspires. Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca, but also the underwater world with its dolphins, and it is breath taking to see Umberto dancing through the water.
