Introductie

"The Big Blue" is a movie that many freedivers will know, and probably have seen. From the few existing movies around on the subject of free diving, this is probably the one with the strongest effect on the general population.

The main part of the motion picture depicts events at the end of the 80´s. Aside from the large different disciplines or the existing history as we know today; only one kind of freediving is presented: No-Limits.

The story is only loosely based upon the real life of Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca. The way how Enzo and his family were depicted in the movie was reason for him end all co-operation. The director overcame the problem by changing the name of Maiorca into Malorca.

The story starts at the island where Enzo and Jacques live through their childhood. The sea plays in both lives an important role and it becomes fast clear that their relationship isn´t exactly the same. As a child the introvert Jacques tries to avert the extravert Enzo, and denies his invitation to competitions to see who the best in breath-hold diving is.

After a few years, we meet Enzo again. This time as world record holder and world champion. He decides to search for Jacques again and invite him for the world championship. This time, Jacques accepts the invitation, with some serious results.

The movie, with Jean-Marc Barr as Jacques Mayol, Rosanne Arquette as Johanne Baker and Jean Reno as Enzo Molinair has been criticized by reviewers and loved by the audience. Although the described freediving society in the movie is not in any way comparable to today´s world of diving, it is still a beautiful way to discover something of the spirits that make people decide to start diving free.

The Movie

The Movie needed to be edited eight time before the director, Luc Besson, was content with the results. Many recorded scenes where cut out and perhaps that these will return to the screen one day.

Even after that, there have been different versions of the movie in circulation:

Niettemin zijn er al de nodige verschillende versies van de film in omloop:
1. Le Grand Bleu
The original European version.
2. The Big Blue: "The Sea Has A Secret."
An adapted version for the American audience with a different end.
3. Le Grand Bleu Version Longue
Subtitle: "N'y allex pas, ça dure trois heurs" Or, Don´t go, it length is three hours.
This longer version was released after the success of the original movie for the cinenema.
4. The Big Blue: adapted for television
In this version where more scenes cut than in the original version to make it reasonable short enough for television.
5. The Big Blue: 'The Directors Cut'
A special version ten years after the original movie being released.
6. The Big Blue: the series?
There has been a rumor that there once was an adaptation for a television serial.

The Music

The beautiful music of Eric Serra have been avaible on compact disc in several versions, most of them by Virgin.

Known titles are; Eric Serra "Le Grand Bleu", Eric Serra "Le Grand Bleu" Volume II, a double CD and special version for the "Le Grand Bleu Version Longue"

The Book

The director of the movie, Luc Besson, wrote a book based on his experience in writing the movie: Luc Besson L'histoire du Grand Bleu (Aventure et decouverte d'un film, mise en scene de Luc Besson) Intervista 1994, ISBN 2-910753-00X

The book depicts how Luc Besson came upon the idea of the movie, about his endeavors with the "real" Jacques Mayol, how several scenes where shot and the attention when the movie was released. Also it becomes clear how much the movie was based upon Luc Besson ideas instead of the reality of freediving.

A different book produced is: Le Grand Blue, written by Alain Gillet, and published by Ramsay. Finally, Jacques Mayol has used a whole chapter about the movie and his experiences in his book (Homo Delphinus, The Dolphin Within Man).
