Fathom 1

Zanzibar, Mafia & Pemba

Revieuw by Rik Rösken

This month saw the release of the first DVD of the Fathom series. This DVD series should become a quarterly magazine on diving, and that idea makes it quite interesting to follow. The general idea of a DVD magazine on diving is a great idea. It is a superb medium to demonstrate the three dimensional underwater world and it is much easier to catch the information in comparison with active reading.

The first edition presents a main feature about three islands of Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba, showing underwater footage of the same quality we have seen on the SFOC DVD. We see much of the underwater surroundings of the islands and are briefed by divers about what you can expect of diving there. Besides seeing a lot of the underwater situation, the DVD also offers to give you insight at the nearby accommodation.

Other features include freediving, equipment review, photography and the award winning movie Dalirium of Leandro Blanco.

In the first edition, the freediving section is limited with three little documentaries on the question what freediving is and two items on the two athletes Martin Stepanek and Stefane Mifsud. Especially the documentary on Stefane Mifsud is interesting since it also contains some scenes from his 8:24 static dive. The equipment review discusses the Olympos/Light & Motion Tetra 5050 digital underwater camera housing and the Fourth Element's new wetsuit material. In both reviews the equipment is tested by independent divers. Finally there is also a presentation of a new photography book on Borneo's marine life.

Special attention should be given to the award-winning short film "Dalirium" of Leandro Blanco. The movie played in on what Dali would have done if he would brought his art more closer to the sea as he have done.
