Revieuw by Rik Rösken The Imax movie "Oceanmen" is recorded in 2001 during the battle in the depth between Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and Umberto Pellizari about the elusive title, deepest diver of the world. The movie starts with an introduction in this sport with beautiful scenes of the divers in their element. From these quite scenes the focus is moved through a short history of the sport, explained by Jacques Mayol, changing into the youth of the both divers, about their different countries, their different backgrounds, other philosophies but also chairing the same love for the sea and the willpower to go where no one has gone before on one single breath. On the massive screen the tension rises when coming near and near the final climax of their dives in their favorite discipline. The music, the beautiful pictures and the breath-taking story does this make a movie that every freediver should have seen. Except telling the story of two remarkable men, the movie also tries to explain something of the physiological changes these divers go through when traveling through the depth. It seems to have been a difficult choice for the directors to choose between telling the epic story, or choosing for a more scientific approach of what this kind of diving does to someone's body. Although the choice haven't been clearly made, the movies makes everything perfect. During the summer months of 2004 could this movie been seen in the Omniversum in The Hague. Due that the company behind the movie did come in financial difficulties, its future of a release on DVD is still uncertain. Nevertheless, if more news is known, it will be available on this site. Meanwhile, a Japanese edition of the documentary have been released, and more information can be found at that specific page. Meanwhile it is still possible to visit the former stite: |
