Danai Varveri has been most known for her announced world record dive in 1999 to 35 meters
without mask, fins or suit in 71 seconds. This specific dive and some of its circumstances has
been de basis of the movie The Freediver.
As in the movie, she dove at the Island of Spetses and is trained by a physican, Dr. Nikolas Trikilis
Six years later, the 26 year old has been busy in finishing her studies at the University.
She also got married and has given live to a child. Recently she picked up diving again and
achieved under the guidance of her mentor the depth of 37 meters at the first diving festival of
Kalymnos. However, she didn't compete at the second festival held in 2005.
The movie about her does carry both fiction as facts and it wouldn't be the first time
that a athlethe suffers due of the believes that are carried over by a motion picture. Hopefully
she will be able shrug the story off her shoulders and will be able to demonstrate her aquatic
abilities before a greater audience.
