Supplements and doping related problems

By Rik Rösken

With achievements improving, some athletes consider using supplements to boost their performances. The motivation to use supplements can be quite different; some freedivers believe that using supplements might prevent overtraining instead of changing the training pattern itself. Other use supplements to compensate believed vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

While the use of supplements might be controversial, it is perhaps more important to keep in mind the possible effects that supplements can have. Many of these supplements are made at factories who also prepare general medical products and pollution is thus always possible.

To give athletes more security, the Dutch commission on doping related problems has founded a database with independent checked supplements. These supplement are only checked for each individual batch and each new batch needs to be rechecked to pass the test.
