3rd Dordtdive 2005

By Rik Rösken

The Dordtdive competition was been held for the third time in the relative cold waters of the Aquapulca Swimming pool in Dordtdrecht, The Netherlands. Independent of the cold, new achievements where made just as last year, establishing the competition more and more in the Netherlands. As an extra asset, this year, special attention was for the Dutch Asthmatics foundation, reminding that not all of us have such a long breath as most freedivers have.

The competitors field existed of twenty-six contestants from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Among those where several divers who held national records in the past. The overall competition on static and dynamic apnea was extra accentuated with a newbie cup to promote the competitions for new athletes.

Not all competitors showed up. As such, we missed the head on static between word record holder Tom Sietas and Kars van Kouwen. Ilness prevented him to stay at the Dordrecht competition. Also other competitors as Pieter Buis made the competition interesting.

There was some tension. Would Kars van Kouwen reclaim the first place as last year? Would there be a new contestants to challenge the older generation of divers? What became clear that the marks once guaranteed to give success, 5 minutes and 100 meter, nowadays is the least you need to acquire the first five places.

While none new national records have been achieved, the competitions did result in various good achievements for contestants. The good humour and organisation will leave us with a good feeling and will probably cause many of the competitors to return next year.
